Gill, Matthews, Seger perform on Little Feat CD

08/25/2008 3:00 PM, AP

Vince Gill didn't need coaxing to record tracks for a new CD featuring classics by influential '70s group Little Feat.

"Since I was about 18 or 19 they've been my favorite band," Gill told The Associated Press recently.

Gill joined Dave Matthews, Brooks & Dunn, Bob Seger, Brad Paisley, Jimmy Buffett and Emmylou Harris for "Little Feat and Friends: Join the Band," to be released Tuesday.

"I loved Lowell George, the way he played and sang and the funkiness of their records," said Gill, who sings the group's signature tune "Dixie Chicken" and plays guitar on "Spanish Moon."

Formed in Los Angeles in 1969, Little Feat blended rock with country, blues, jazz and other musical styles. Some of their better-known songs also include "Fat Man in the Bathtub," "Sailin' Shoes" and "Oh Atlanta."

The group disbanded when frontman Lowell George died in 1979, but they later re-formed and continue to record and tour. For the new disc, they rerecorded their classics with special guests like Gill.

"I've known them forever," Gill, 51, said. "We've been friends and I've jammed with them plenty.

"Those guys were inspiring to me."

Others performing on the album include Bela Fleck, Sonny Landreth, Sam Bush and Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes.
